Steam Tug Robert A. Packer
Launched: 1882 Newburgh, New York
Model length: 22"
Building time: 12 1/2 weeks
This model is a redesigned replica of the six-foot R.A. Packer model that I restored for a private collector (see restoration page). That six-foot antique was too large for his home and was donated to the Owls Head Transportation Museum. This model was built to a smaller scale. The hull was deepened, masts and stack heightened and a few items were added to make this rendition conform more closely to the real vessel while keeping the feel of the original antique.

Thames River Sailing Barge Sophia
Model length: 5 1/2"
Building time: 4 weeks
In 1985 I had the good fortune to purchase for salvage an 84' Thames River Sailing Barge. The Ethel, built in Harwich, England in 1894, was a beautiful example of those sturdy cargo vessels. I lived aboard and sailed her from New York to Maine. The Ethel turned out to be haunted and I couldn't sell her fast enough. A dozen years later I built this model of her from memory. I decided to name the model after a stray cat that was kind enough to supervise my endeavor.
